Study for your AP exam with NotecramHow the AP score calculator works
The College Board converts your raw multiple-choice and free-response points into a weighted composite, then maps that composite onto the 1–5 AP scale. The exact cutoffs vary by exam and year, but they're publicly reported afterward. This calculator uses recent composite cutoffs so you can get a realistic estimate while you're still practicing.
AP score scale
- 5 — Extremely well qualified. Almost always grants college credit.
- 4 — Well qualified. Credit at most universities.
- 3 — Qualified. Credit at many schools, but not all selective ones.
- 2 — Possibly qualified. No credit at most colleges.
- 1 — No recommendation.

How accurate is this AP score calculator?
It uses publicly reported composite score cutoffs from recent AP exams. Real cutoffs shift year to year, so treat your result as an estimate within ~1 score.
Do colleges accept a 3?
Most colleges award credit for a 3 or higher, but many selective universities require a 4 or 5. Check each college's AP credit policy.
How is the AP composite score calculated?
Your raw multiple-choice points and free-response points are weighted (roughly 50/50 for most exams), summed into a composite, then mapped to the 1–5 AP scale.
What's a good AP score?
5 is extraordinarily well qualified, 4 is well qualified, 3 is qualified. 4 or 5 is the safe target for credit at competitive schools.
